Different hotels charge different fees, just like different airlines charge different baggage fees. If the resort fee seems high, it is made up for by the low rate. At $50 per night, I think it is a great deal, especially for a 5-star hotel on the weekends and Christmas in LV, when rates typically run over $200 per night + resort fees.
We just had friends in town who stayed at one of the City Center hotels on a weekday for over $200 per night + resort fees.
